Is Your Heartburn a Sign of Something More Serious?

Is Your Heartburn a Sign of Something More Serious?

Many of us feel a burning sensation in our chest after a heavy meal. At Los Angeles Gastroenterology Clinic in Santa Monica, California, Dr. S. Radi Shamsi helps people throughout Santa Monica, Brentwood, and West Los Angeles understand their digestive symptoms. We provide expert care for those struggling with persistent heartburn.

When does heartburn become GERD?

Occasional reflux happens when stomach acid temporarily rises into your esophagus. However, frequent symptoms may mean you have Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

For adults with classic heartburn or regurgitation and no alarm symptoms, the American College of Gastroenterology recommends an eight-week trial of a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) taken once daily before a meal.

If your symptoms don’t improve adequately or return after you stop the medication, you may need further testing. We offer personalized evaluations to determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment.

What are the warning signs of a serious problem?

Some symptoms mean you should skip over-the-counter remedies and seek immediate medical care. The American College of Gastroenterology recommends an upper endoscopy as the first test for patients with trouble swallowing, vomiting, anemia, unexplained weight loss, or bleeding.

These "alarm symptoms" can point to physical damage or narrowing in your esophagus or other conditions that deserve prompt evaluation. Dr. Shamsi performs these gentle camera evaluations to check your digestive tract. Identifying these structural issues early allows us to create a highly targeted treatment plan.

Could your heartburn actually be a heart issue?

It is easy to mistake chest pain for simple acid reflux. The American Heart Association notes that patients cannot safely tell the difference between cardiac and non-cardiac chest pain on their own.

The heart and the esophagus share the same nerve pathways to the brain. Because symptoms can overlap, reflux-related chest discomfort can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from heart-related chest pain. If you have sudden or worsening chest pain, seek emergency medical care first. Once we rule out cardiac issues, we can safely evaluate your esophageal health.

How to manage your symptoms safely

Many people rely on over-the-counter pills to manage their daily discomfort. The US Food and Drug Administration states that over-the-counter proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are used for frequent heartburn, are intended for 14-day treatment courses. If symptoms persist or you need treatment more often than the label recommends, talk with a healthcare professional.

For people with nighttime reflux, elevating the head of the bed may also help. A 2021 systematic review found generally favorable results, although the available studies were small and had important limitations. We can help you combine lifestyle changes and medical treatments to manage your digestive health safely.

If frequent heartburn or reflux symptoms are interfering with your daily life, schedule a visit with our Santa Monica, California, office. We can evaluate your symptoms and determine whether further testing or treatment may be appropriate.
